We had a fun time at our very informal July sew-in meeting at the West Newbury Town Hall Annex.
Everyone wandered in, plugged up their sewing machines, and got to sewing pillowcases to donate to children entering the foster care system in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Joanne and Michelle will collect the pillowcases for distribution.
Together we made thirty-seven pillowcases (including a bag full of completed ones that Gail brought). I brought home one more to finish, as did several other people. If you get the itch to make more, they will be happily accepted at our August meeting. They will be logged into the Million Pillowcase challenge!
We took a short break for everyone's favorite part of any meeting: Show and Tell.
Mary showed off a brightly colored plus quilt.
Jessica turned her fabric collage project from our June meeting into Totedor the Baginator. It's always great to see a workshop piece turned into a final project.
Laura's quilt is made from Washi Dress scraps.
Kali (a first-time visitor! Welcome) showed off a solids HST quilt she is not sure she is done with.
Diane brought a table runner (I see a peek of an Asbury scrap!). She did her perfect circle quilting using circles cut out of freezer paper, lightly ironed on to her quilt sandwich.
Diane also showed off a yellow and blue tote bag she made with some lovely free-motion quilting.
Peg brought a top made with some Kaffe prints and the new Andover textured solids.
Amy brought a pillow made with Heather Ross's forthcoming Briar Rose line. She machine-pieced the clamshells, after cutting them with her Sizzix cutter.
Amy also showed her Lone Star quilt.
Amy's Spinning Wheel quilt is featured on the cover of the September 2013 issue of American Quilter. (The pattern, drafted and written by Amy, is available in the issue.) They used Amy's own photo for the cover!
Our Indian Summer group quilts are coming right along. Karen completed the top below, with the navy center. The outer border is cleverly pieced from the fat quarter cuts we were given!
Jessica and Mary show off their group's work. Joanne, Stephanie, and Samantha also worked to complete these pieces. The back is on the left and the front is on the right? Both are amazing.
And I can't resist sharing a photo of our group discussing a floor full of Quilts for Boston quilts. The tops were assembled by the folks from the
Boston Modern Quilt Guild, and quilted and bound by a bunch of us from SMQG. The blocks came from around the world, and when you think about it, the collaborative effort it took to make these quilts is truly touching.
And Amy took our group's pile of quilts and gave them the special quilt photographer's treatment.
Join us on August 3 back at the West Newbury Town Hall Annex for our August meeting. As always, expect drinks, snacks, and Show and Tell.
Please bring: completed pillowcases, completed Indian Summer Baby quilts.
Workshop: A representative from Pellon will be visiting to speak about Pellon products.
See you then!
