April Meeting Reminder

Our April meeting will be held on Saturday, April 4 from 10 am to 12 pm at the West Newbury Old Town Hall. (NOTE: this is different from the Annex. The Old Town Hall is where Robin and Sam led the Improv workshop of last spring.)

We will be holding a brief quilt-sleeve attaching demo. If you'd like to look at the tutorial ahead of time, it is Jacquie Gering's tutorial, and can be found HERE. (if you set out to do this on your own before the meeting, don't hem the sleeve "on all sides," hem only the left and the right sides.)

Then Amy will demonstrate how to paper-piece her Kite Tails quilt pattern (see her Instagram post with hers and Judy's sample blocks, above!) and we will have a sew-in for raffle blocks. Please bring your sewing machine, equipped with the following:

Please come prepared to sew with your sewing machine loaded with cream/off white thread and a size 90 needle or Jeans needle (they are size 90). Bring scissors, pins. Amy will have the fabric and foundation paper ready and do a demonstration.

If you previously volunteered to bring an ironing board or a rotary cutter/mat, please remember to do so!

Due to the amount of ground we need to cover, and needing to have enough time to sew our blocks, please continue to hold your show and tell until the May meeting. We will have a show-and-tell-a-palooza in May, I promise!

April meeting sew-in information

Our April meeting will be a sew-in for our Gathering raffle quilt. The Exhibit committee has chosen a bundle of Anna Maria Horner fabrics with a Kona Bone background, and Amy has donated/allowed use of her Kite Tails pattern.

Please come prepared to sew with your sewing machine loaded with cream/off white thread and a size 90 needle or Jeans needle (they are size 90).

Bring scissors, pins.We need to have at least 2 volunteers to bring irons and ironing boards and 2 volunteers to bring cutting mats and rotary cutters.Amy will have the fabric and foundation paper ready and do a demonstration.

If you are not already a confident machine paper-piecer, fear not! You have a great opportunity to learn and practice this widely-used modern quilting skill.

The meeting will be held at the Old Town Hall in West Newbury (NOT the Annex). See you on April 4 at 10 am!

Lee Heinrich Trunk Show

We were pleased to host Lee Heinrich, co-author of Vintage Quilt Revival and blogger at FreshlyPieced.com for a trunk show at the Page School in West Newbury last Saturday. Lee's quilts were as delightful as she was.

After Laura introduced Lee, she began by telling us how she began her journey into quilting. She didn't grow up sewing though her mother did. One day, Lee saw Denyse Schmidt on an episode of Martha Stewart Living and the designs appealed to the graphic designer in her.

It was only after Lee began knitting in the early 2000s that she became more acquainted with the handmade arts. Lee characterized knitting as her "gateway drug" to quilting.

When her mother decided to upgrade her own sewing machine, Lee inherited the old one and was on her way.

Lee explained her use of her graphic design training in her quilt design, often using bold directional lines and and patterns that forsake borders for elements that spill off the edges.

Blogging led to sew alongs, then books and pattern designs. She explained that she believed that "modern quilting" was a spectrum with room for many interpretations and traditional elements.

Lee answered questions on technique, sewing space and process.

Raffle prizes were drawn and Melanie won the signed book from Lee along with a solid bundle featured inside. Robin also won a book and Diane won the QuiltCon swag bag.

Some up close ooh'ing and ahh'ing was in order when the trunk show was over.

Thanks to Lee who was gracious and entertaining. Thanks to Nancy and Barbara who played Vanna White with the quilts. Thanks to all those who brought goodies and beverages.

Next meeting will be a raffle quilt sew-in at the Old Town Hall, Main Street, West Newbury, MA
