March 2021 SMQG meeting minutes

SEACOAST MODERN QUILT GUILD

MONTHLY MEETING (via Zoom)

MARCH 6, 2021

Attendees:

JoAnne D, Paula K, Barbara M, Barbara W, Brenda S, Theresa H, Lou S, Mary O, Colleen H, Letty B, Barb B, Diane S, Suzanne W, Patty C, Carol B and, Wendy Ward (new member)

JoAnne welcomed everyone to our meeting and began with a special saying:

“The secret to getting ahead is getting started.”  This is a great motivator for quilting.

Committee Reports:

Treasurer’s report was given.  A reminder will be sent out to those who haven’t paid dues yet.

Secretary’s report – nothing to add from the published February minutes.

JoAnne welcomed our newest member, Wendy Ward to the guild.  Wendy has been quilting since her 4H days in the Midwest, mostly traditional.  She is interested in learning Modern.

Hospitality and Retreat: Haley and Kate did not attend.

Programs:

UFO: at next month’s meeting each person will show their unfinished quilt and tell the group a little bit about it (i.e. what interested you in that particular piece, inspiration).

The UFO should be completed (bound) for our September meeting.

Since many members have unfinished quilts some suggestions on how to get them, as well as new projects is to:

~ make a list of the incomplete works and new ones that you want to work on.  When finished, note it as ‘completed’

~leave everything set up and ready to go

~set deadlines (i.e. BoM)

There are Project Planners that can help organize.  Provides a year at a glance with reference pages.

Month 3 of our Piece & Love Block of the Month by modern quilt designer Sherry Shish is now available on our page of her website.  Everyone has received the details on accessing it but if you need it resent let JoAnne know.

We’ll need to get to work since Blocks 1 & 2 (Jan & Feb) have been completed/underway.  Several members showed their progress and/or the fabrics they’ve chosen.

Reminder: Do not share the pattern with anyone.  It is meant to be used by members, only.

Pintuck & Purl is offering special pricing to our members for this project. If you decide to purchase your fabric from them you can use curbside pickup, shipping or go into the shop (masks required, please check hours).

Barb Brian has received some great responses to the Program activities survey.  Areas of particular interest include Curves, Piecing, and Embroidery as well as Color Theory, Y seams, and alternate binding options.  The complete list will be narrowed down in the BoD meeting.

Show and Tell:

Diane showed us her BoM using fabric she designed.  She added some beautiful embroidery to the block.

JoAnne showed us the progress she’s making on her Quilted Threads BoM.  For our BoM she is using Carolyn Frielander graphics for the background squares.

Mary made a beautiful Valentine table runner, ready for next Valentine’s Day.  She used Amanda Murphy rulers and a heart ruler by Saraditty.  JoAnne noted that 24 weight Aurafil is a good thread for ruler work.

Theresa is using Anna Maria Horner fabric for the BoM

Colleen is continuing hand quilting her mother’s friend’s quilt.  For the BoM she is deciding between Kaffe and Holiday fabrics.

Patty is knitting colorful winter pom pom hats.

Barb B is working on an Amy Gibson quilt from Amy’s Quilt Block Cookbook. She will  incorporate 5 blocks that she’s finished in her BoM we’re making.

Suzanne is making a baby quilt using grunge and stars for backing.  She also showed us a beautiful 1,100 piece quilt which she hand-made and quilted. She started it during a one year road trip with her husband in a truck and took 10 years to fully complete.

Lou is working on baby blankets and burp cloths in anticipation of a new family member and friend's baby.

Brenda showed us 2 sweet Easter table runners and a Karen Guska made quilt hanging on her wall.

There was a discussion on how to prevent colors from bleeding.  Tips include washing first using a color catcher or dawn dish detergent and ammonia.  Patty uses safety pins on the corners and in the middle when washing/drying.  Makes it easier to iron.
