Colleen took a Kawandi quilt class (virtually) with others from around the globe, offered by Sujata Shah (The Root Connection on IG). The workshop focused on quilts called Kawandi (also known as Siddi quilts) and they are utility quilts made by people in the African/Diaspora/Siddi community of India. You use a cloth backing, whatever you have on hand, batting (or some type of middle layer, can be more fabric, etc) and then beginning on the outer edges, begin to sew your fabric, piece by piece, until you have the outer edges covered. Then, you continue hand stitching around and around, covering these fabric pieces, adding more fabric pieces to the inside, stitching around the entire piece again, adding fabric as you go, until you place your last piece of fabric in the center.

To learn more check out Sujata’s IG or her blog at therootconnection.blogspot.com   for more information.

Cathy is working on an Alex Anderson Trees quilt featuring some fun colors that takes you into the forest.

Paula is working on our BoM, cutting block 5. She is also working on the UFO challenge!

Sasha finished a colorful and fun quilt of houses which sat waiting patiently for a year to be bound!

JoAnne is working on Disney themed masks (21) for her family to wear on their upcoming trip to the park.

Suzanne wasn’t able to stay for the meeting but showed her beautiful Butterfly quilt.,

Barbara M suggested a swap of unfinished work where each person would take on another member’s project and continue the work/finish the piece.  We can discuss in more detail at the next meeting.
