April 2023 General Membership

Meeting Minutes

The April meeting was held at the North Hampton Public Library with 14 attendees. Meeting called to order at 10:08am

    1. Business (Barbara)

  • MQG is hosting on their website “2023 MQG Color Palette Inspiration”, a monthly post of a color curated selection inspired by past QuiltCon award winning quilts. Each color has the international hex code that one can use to research the color online. Here is the March Palette.

  • As a member of MQG, one can go to the MQG website and see all of the 2023 QuiltCon winners in each category. Just sign in to the MQG website.

  • Barbara issued a challenge this past January for each of us to explore the MQG website. Find a webinar or other online feature that interests you, view it, and report it at an upcoming meeting.

  • 2023 membership fees were due March 1. Our chapter had to pay our chapter fees to national March 15, so if you have not paid yet, please do so now. Renewal or new members $50.00 for the year. Mail your check to Seacoast Modern Quilt Guild, P.O. 808, Ipswich MA 01938.

  • Volunteer(s) needed to make stick on labels updating our chapter postcards. DONE: Joyce volunteered.

  • Our chapter needs a Publicity Chairperson. Our membership will only grow if area quilters know about us. Please contact Barbara if interested in this position.

Upcoming Meetings

  • May Meeting: We usually do not hold a meeting in May as it is right after our annual retreat. HOWEVER, this year the board has arranged for our membership to participate in a new online event presented by the Academy for Virtual Teaching. It is the “Sampler Platter” presented on YouTube, May 6 & 7, 3;00 – 6:00pm each day. 18 national level teachers will give a 15 minute presentation, each on a different technique. A link will be sent to the chapter membership to attend.

  • June Meeting: “Surface Design Workshop”, a 3-hour workshop. Site to be announced.

Treasurer’s Report (Theresa)

  • Everyone has paid for their retreat reservation.

  • Deposit has been paid to Franciscan Center for retreat. Balance due will be paid upon arrival.

Retreat

April 28-30, Franciscan Guest House, Kennebunk, ME

We have 19 attendees, all paid in full. The deposit has been made and the balance will be paid upon our arrival. Barbara has created a food sign-up sheet for the pot luck dinner Friday evening, breakfast Saturday & Sunday, and for snacks. She has also created a lunch selection sign-up so we can pre-order. Both are available via links that were sent to retreat attendees.

Mainely Mimi’s quilt shop in Wells, ME is offering a 20% discount to retreat attendees for that weekend. It was suggested that 2 tables be set up at retreat. Attendees can bring quilting related items that they wish to get rid of. One table would be free giveaway items, the other would be items for sell.

Charity (Brenda)

Brenda will bring all of the string blocks to retreat so people can sew them together to create a quilt top. She suggested this quilt be donated to Crossroads House in Portsmouth as they need bed quilts. She also suggested that each person who donates a completed charity quilt for the guild to donate have their name placed in a bag. At the end of the year, one person’s name would be drawn for a prize.

Activities (Marylee  & Diane)

  • Diane collected all deconstructed mini’s that were brought today for display. Attendees voted on the top 3 favorites.

      1. Paula

      2. (tied) MaryLee & Donna

  • Scooter Block – Pattern requires a focal fabric, solid white, plus 3 others

fabrics pulling colors from focal fabric. Diane will be supplying the focal

fabric (a floral) and the white. Each participating member to supply

remaining 3 from own stash. Can use “Palette Builder”, a free app,

to get Kona fabric recommendations. Diane then showed us how to use

Quick Curve Ruler from Sew Kind of Wonderful to make the circles.

Participants got to use the ruler and build block.

  • Tone & Value – MaryLee explained what color terms mean.

      • Hue” means the color itself

      • Shade” means the given color mixed with black

      • Tone” means the given color mixed with grey

      • Tint” means the given color mixed with white

Participants then had the opportunity to play with fabric squares to create color ranges and see how these terms apply.
